I had tried in the past making homemade liquid laundry detergent and it didn't quite work out. Then I tried making a dry powder laundry detergent and wasn't crazy about that either. I had a friend talking about it recently as well as reading the post by Brandi at The Marathon Mom and thought I better give that another try. With six now in our family I am going through A LOT more laundry detergent.
Most recipes have Fels Naptha in them. I don't personally know what the ingredients are in Fels Naptha but I know that I don't really like the smell! ;) So here is a recipe to use all natural organic bar soap which works great.
Homemade Liquid Laundry Detergent with Natural Soap
What you need:
1 bar all natural soap
1/2 cup Borax
Water
5 gallon bucket or empty laundry bucket
Now to make it:
- Grate the bar of soap and place in a pan with 5 cups of water. Bring to boil gradually.
- Fill bucket 2/3 full of hot tap water.
- Add melted soap, borax, and washing soda. Stir well.
- Fill the bucket the rest of the way with hot tap water. Stir again.
- Set aside until morning.
- Stir before using. It will be liquidy and gloppy - my own word there. ;)
Use 1/2 to 1 cup of detergent depending on your machine and size of load. I have a top loading machine and use closer to 1 cup with the laundry detergent. I do think I go a little over board and probably don't need that much. The good thing is I don't have to feel bad because it costs me very little to make!
Let me know how you like it!
